Philippines Suspends Dengue Fever Vaccination Program

The Philippines Government has suspended a school-based immunisation programme following revelations that a vaccine against dengue fever could cause symptoms of the disease to become more severe.

The warnings come from French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi Pasteur which admitted clinical data showed Dengvaxia – the first licensed dengue vaccine – could make the disease worse in people who had not previously been infected with the virus. This comes after more than 733,000 across the Philippines children had been immunised.
